Eifelheim book7/7/2023 Tom and Sharon, and Father Dietrich, have a strange and intertwined destiny of tragedy and triumph in this brilliant SF novel by the winner of the Robert A. It is a time of wonders, in the shadow of the plague. Incredible book, but it would be even better if the first book of the trilogy was actually available More Books by Michael Flynn The January Dancer. Dietrich is an educated man, knows science and philosophy, and to his astonishment becomes the first contact between humanity and an alien race from a distant star when their interstellar ship crashes in the nearby forest. Father Dietrich is the village priest of Eifelheim, in the year 1348, when the Black Death is gathering strength but is still not nearby. What’s was special about Eifelheim that it utterly disappeared more than 600 years ago? Father Dietrich is the village priest of Oberhochwald, the village that will soon gain the name of Teufelheim, in later years corrupted to Eifelheim, in the year 1348, when the Black Death is gathering strength across Europe but is still not nearby. By all logic, the town should have survived, but it didn’t and that violates everything Tom knows about history. Tom, a contemporary historian, and his theoretical physicist girlfriend Sharon, become interested. In 1349, one small town in Germany disappeared and has never been resettled. Empyre dan slott7/7/2023 As a Fantastic Four fan, I was satisfied, though I will admit that I was disappointed in the end. The dialogue is fun and natural, and overall this is an enjoyable read. The issue touches on some of the Kree and Skrull history, but mostly provides some great character moments for the protagonists, especially the young ones. Still, even if it isn’t essential reading, Dan Slott has crafted another enjoyable Fantastic Four story that mostly reads as a neat little one-shot. It doesn’t seem to be essential reading for anyone except those who plan on consuming all of Empyre and for massive Fantastic Four fans. Obviously this left readers with a lot of questions, and Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 is here to give some answers.Įmpyre: Fantastic Four #0 is a solid prelude to the big event, but it doesn’t really offer too much information. The cliffhanger however stood out, seemingly putting the Fantastic Four on the enemy’s side. It was pretty standard stuff, but it read like a classic Avengers story and offered plenty of potential for a solid event. SilvaĮmpyre #0 gave an interesting enough introduction to Marvel’s next big event. Empyre: Fantastic Four #0 Marvel Comics Writer: Dan Slott Artist: R.B.

Jet by russell blake7/7/2023 For some time she wondered what she would do with herself and if she even wanted to go on but Jet is a survivor and she does. The true series begins after she has faked her death and fled to the other side of the world only to be told months later that her child died in birth and she is totally alone. Agents in her line of work cannot be allowed the luxury of having children so if she wants a new life, she has to die first. Still, Jet, whose real name is Maya though she makes sure no one but her boss and lover, David, knows it, has one excellent reason for leaving her previous life and that is the growing life inside her. She knew the facts of her profession, though, and that is no one got out alive. She was, at least, until she decided after numerous years of being its top assassin, the best in a small group of skilled operatives who do the nasty work no one else can do, that she was tired and wanted a real life.

Jane austen at home by lucy worsley7/6/2023 Unlike fiction, I can’t just keep reading, desperate to get to the end. The thing about biographies is that I really need to take my time. I don’t understand how I can navigate the most convoluted plot with ease, but a biography has me frowning and flipping back a few pages at a time. I was reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. As a general rule, I am really not a fan of biographies – I find myself getting confused about dates and names and importance of people. In fact, the first weekend I had the book, I took myself off to the Lake District for Beatrix Potter’s house, exhibitions, and walking. This would come back to bit me, as I wasn’t much in the mood for reading when I first took it out. Lucy Worsley’s biography, Jane Austen At Home seemed like it would be accessible (and it had a cute cover). But despite adoring Jane’s novels, I never knew much about Jane. I would probably still rank them as Persuasion, Emma, S&S, P&P, with Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park ranking far below. As recently as last year, Emma was read, and adored. During my teenage year, Sense and Sensibility and steady Elinor were touchstones, then once I was a little older and in sixth form, Persuasion became my favourite.

Paper Peepshows by Ralph Hyde7/6/2023 A revised version of his hitherto unpublished catalogue of parish maps of London is in the early stages on preparation. He was also probably the world’s leading expert on panoramas and related phenomena such as peepshows – his book Paper Peepshows: The Jacqueline & Jonathan Gestetner Collection was published in March 2015 and he had fresh projects in mind. Ralph will be best known to map historians as the author of the standard work, Printed Maps of Victorian London (1975), and many other books and articles on historic maps of London, often published under the auspices of Harry Margary and the London Topographical Society, including Ward Maps of the City of London (1999). I have the very sad duty of reporting the death last weekend, following a heart attack, of Ralph Hyde, the former keeper of prints, maps and drawings at Guildhall Library, London.
